CANADA GEESE CONTROL
Canada geese are a non-native species of geese common to the UK. They are the most widespread species of goose. There are an estimated 62,000 breeding pairs of Canada geese in the UK. Canada geese feed on grass and herbage and are commonly found on manicured lawns such as those that can be found in golf courses and parks. They can cause a lot of damage both with their grazing and fouling. Canada geese are currently on the general licence allowing lethal control of them as long as the landowner has given permission and certain specific conditions have been met.
TREATMENT
The best option to prevent Canada geese is to deter them from using an area in the first place. There are two options which can be used to deter Canada geese. The first is a dog deterrent. This involves the continual exposure of a population of Canada geese to a dog. The dog is walked through the geese population daily for a set amount of time. The geese regard the dog as a predator and the continual sight of the dog can act as a deterrent. The second deterrent is to oil the geese eggs. This involves covering the eggs with Vaseline. This will prevent the eggs from hatching. Once the eggs don’t hatch the geese will abandon the nest. If the nest is not successful then the geese are unlikely to nest in the same place again.
Lethal control of Canada geese is the last option. It can only be considered if all other options have been exhausted and the geese remain a problem. The only lethal option is shooting which can only be done if it is safe to carry it out.
